Trans Activists Rally In Bmore For Healthcare Access, Housing, And Other Services

What’s happening?

On July 24, Black trans activists hosted a rally at the War Memorial Plaza calling on city leaders to offer better access to health care, employment, and foster care, as well as substance use support, housing, and education about and for the LGBTQ+ community.

Anything else I should know?

They also demanded that local officials enforce nondiscrimination policies, as anti-transgender fatality rates hit a record high, nationally, according to the Human Rights campaign.

“We deserve to be able to get to walk without having to look behind our backs, wondering if someone is going to attack us out of pure ignorance,” said Kaycee Voorhees, who attended the rally.

What’s the city doing about this?

Earlier this month, the Mayor’s Office of Homeless Services announced a partnership with Baltimore Safe Haven to provide youth-focused transitional housing services. “We are going to be a city that understands and pushes to make sure that they know that their lives matter just like everyone else in Baltimore City,” said Mayor Brandon Scott, who attended the rally.
