What’s happening

Two years after bulldozing began, century-old buildings that are part of a jail complex in Baltimore have been fully demolished. The jail shut down in 2015 over complaints of living conditions and a gang scandal.

What will happen next?

Maryland Governor Larry Hogan has promised to replace the jail complex with a mental health and substance abuse treatment center. He said the facility could provide arrested men and women who struggle with addiction to a number of treatment options.

State Secretary Robert Green says they’re moving to the center’s two-year design phase but couldn’t detail the cost of the project.

Anything else I should know?

While the site was once a “source of embarrassment for the city and our state,” it will become “a beacon of hope for those struggling with addiction to get the help that they need to heal, to recover and to turn their lives around,” Hogan said.
