Democrat candidate for governor, Wes Moore, pledged to push for improvements in housing, health care access, and job opportunities at a gathering of faith and community leaders at Coppin State University on Sunday afternoon, Cassidy Jensen reports for the Baltimore Sun. 

Republican nominee Dan Cox withdrew from the forum on Friday, though he had originally agreed to attend the event earlier this month. Moore told the Sun that Cox missed the meeting to fly down to Mar-a-Lago, former President Donald Trump’s estate in Florida. 

Why did Moore address those topics specifically? 

The meeting was organized by the Baltimoreans United in Leadership Development (BUILD)—a coalition of faith leaders, nonprofits, and schools—and a related organization, the Prince George’s Leadership Action Network. 

At the forum, BUILD leaders called on Moore to address the estimated 15,000 vacant properties in Baltimore City. The initiatives discussed at the meeting include a $3 billion, 10-year plan to form a state-chartered nonprofit corporation to buy and renovate these properties without displacing residents, as well as opening public jobs for Maryland’s unemployed residents. 

“You cannot address the issue of economic growth and economic vitality if we continue to have not just pockets but absolute deserts, deserts, of economic blight,” Moore said at the forum.
