What’s happening?
A new exhibit at The Peale Center highlights Black women change-makers in Baltimore. The photo and storytelling project is a collaboration between creative director and artist Whitney Frazier and photographer Kirby Griffin.
The women featured in the exhibit have impacted multiple communities across the city and range in professions from a veteran police officer and trauma nurse to a cafe owner.
How did this exhibit come about?
In an interview with WYPR, Frazier said she came up with the idea about five years ago after observing and collaborating with Black women who she calls “guardians.”
“I wanted to use my artistic skills to celebrate them and their stories… I really do see them as the backbone of communities and constantly fighting for change and creating opportunities for people in the neighborhood so I think that Baltimore is a better place because of them,” said Frazier, who knows many of the featured women personally. Some of those women brought others to the exhibit, which showcases 13 total women.
Anything else I should know?
While the women’s impact differs, they share some commonalities including faith-based backgrounds and advocacy efforts around safety, housing, health, and food access for Baltimoreans. The exhibit is running on weekends through December 19.
