Gov. Hogan’s Ex-Chief Of Staff Roy McGrath Fatally Shot, Ending Three-Week-Long Manhunt For The Fugitive

What’s happening?

Gov. Larry Hogan’s ex-chief of staff Roy McGrath was fatally shot as authorities attempted to arrest the fugitive in Eastern Tennessee on Monday, Alex Mann and Lee Sanderlin report for the Baltimore Sun. McGrath, who has been on the run since he failed to show up in court last month, died in a local hospital. An FBI spokesperson said it was unclear whether McGrath shot himself or was shot by an agent. 

Why was McGrath declared a fugitive?

McGrath failed to appear in federal court on March 13 for the start of his criminal trial on fraud charges, after which law enforcement launched a three-week-long manhunt. McGrath was accused of wire fraud, theft, and falsifying documents, for which he pleaded not guilty ahead of the trial. Authorities filed charges against him in 2021, claiming that McGrath stole hundreds of thousands of dollars from the state while serving as the head of the Maryland Environmental Service. 

McGrath was also facing charges filed in Anne Arundel County for misconduct in office and wiretapping when he allegedly recorded government officials, including Hogan, without their consent. 

Anything else I should know? 

Hogan and his wife, Yumi Hogan, released a statement on Monday saying they were saddened by the “tragic situation,” and that the couple was keeping McGrath and his family in their prayers.
