Fire Fatalities In Maryland Increased Sharply In The First Quarter Of 2023

What’s happening?

More Marylanders died from fires in the first three months of 2023 than in the same period over the last two decades, Lilly Price reports for the Baltimore Sun. The state recorded 31 fire fatalities — including those from burning buildings and car crash fires —  from January to March, almost double that of the first quarter last year. The trend in Maryland aligns with a national increase in fire deaths over the past 10 years. 

What is causing the increase in fire fatalities?

The uptick is, in part, caused by the highly flammable material used to make modern furniture, according to Maryland State Fire Marshal Brian Geraci. The furniture, often made with synthetic materials, catches fire and spreads more quickly, allowing people only two to three minutes to escape a burning building compared to 15 minutes in previous decades, according the the National Fire Protection Agency.

Data from the fire marshal’s office shows Baltimore as consistently recording the highest number of fire fatalities in the state, which is exacerbated by the 14,000 vacant buildings across the city. Fires in vacant houses often spread quickly to adjacent properties. This includes a fire in West Baltimore in early May, which spread to five houses—four of which were vacant and designated as “Code X-rays,” a distinction given to properties deemed too dangerous for firefighters to enter.

Among the most common causes of fires are cooking, electricity, cigarettes and other smoking materials and heating appliances, with many fatal fires occurring in homes without working smoke alarms.
