What’s happening?

The food scene in Baltimore City experienced a resurgence in 2022 with enthusiasm for culinary experiences returning to pre-Covid-19 pandemic levels, Kit Pollard reports in Baltimore Fishbowl’s end-of-year restaurant review.

What major restaurant-related news happened over the last year?

Throughout 2022, many restaurants and bars were able to reopen in full-force, including the bars at La Cuchara and the Brewer’s Art, as well as dinner service at Le Comptoir du Vin and carryout at Mari Luna.

The city welcomed a few newcomers to the restaurant scene—such as The Copper Shark on East Fort Avenue, a tequila-focused speakeasy called Clandestino, and the Royal Blue in Station North—and experienced the revival of some old favorites. Velleggia’s, a previous Little Italy staple that closed in the early 2000s, reopened in a new spot at Cross Street Market, and Werner’s, a downtown diner open from 1950 to 2011, was purchased by Pete’s Grill owner Ray Crum and reopened as Werner’s Diner and Pub.

Last year also brought several collaborations between Baltimore City chefs and restaurateurs. Among the most anticipated are H3irloom Food Group’s Juneteenth dinner with culinary historian Michael Twitty and Foraged Eatery’s dinners with Karma Farm and Black Ankle Vineyards.

Anything else I should know?

While 2022 brought more beginnings and revivals than endings, some Baltimore restaurants closed their doors last year, including Aldo’s Ristorante in Little Italy and Bertha’s Mussels in Fell’s Point.
