Baltimore Writer, Filmmaker John Waters Will Donate His Vast Art Collection To The  Baltimore Museum Of Art

What’s happening?

CBS News Sunday Morning aired on March 12 a six-minute segment on Baltimore writer and filmmaker John Waters, 76, and his art collection currently on display at the Baltimore Museum of Art, Ed Gunts reports for Baltimore Fishbowl. The exhibit is called “Coming Attractions: The John Waters Collection.” Waters plans to donate the collection—about 375 works formerly kept in his homes in Baltimore, New York, and San Francisco —to the museum upon his death.

What are some of the notable works featured in the exhibit?

The exhibit displays 90 of the works in Waters’ collection, including pieces by Andy Warhol, Cy Twombly, Richard Serra, Roy Lichtenstein, Cindy Sherman and Nan Goldin. In the segment, Waters highlights Richard Tuttle’s “Peace and Time,” describing the feeling of the artwork as “I had a niece that failed shop class in summer camp.” He also pointed to a crumpled cardboard box with a padlock and chains—an untitled sculpture by Paul Gabrielli—calling it a “crazy person’s secret that I love.”

Waters told correspondent Rita Braver that the BMA was the first place he witnessed the power and influence of art. He said his parents brought him there as a boy, and he bought a postcard of a painting by Joan Miro at the giftshop to show his friends.

“I took it home and hung it up and all the kids went, ‘Oh, it’s ugly,’” he recalled. “That’s when I started collecting art.”

Anything else I should know?

The exhibit, organized by the museum’s Associate Curator of Contemporary Art Leila Grothe and guest curators Catherine Opie and Jack Pierson, will run until April 16.
