What’s happening?
Baltimore Mayor Brandon Scott met with city leaders on Monday to discuss the rise in youth violence and how city agencies can join forces to combat it, Brittney Verner reports for WMAR-2 News. Leaders at the meeting include those from Baltimore City Schools, the Baltimore Police Department, the Mayor’s Office of Neighborhood Safety and Engagement (MONSE), and the health department.
What did the leaders say about the issue?
The increase in youth violence was, in part, caused by the effects of the pandemic, according to city crime data which shows that homicides and shootings are down by 29% in every demographic category except for young people.
“We saw young people experiencing more isolation, many young people who already have what we call adverse childhood experiences or aces, that predispose them potentially to violent acts,” said city health commissioner Dr. Letitia Dzirasa. “So that on top of the isolation, on top of the lack of mental health support and easier access to guns. We know that it’s contributing to what we are seeing.”
Baltimore City Schools CEO Dr. Sonja Santelises and Baltimore Police Commissioner Michael Harrison both said they’ve observed more youth violence concentrated during certain hours of the day, directly before school and after school dismisses. Santelises said that city schools have strengthened their weapons detection system and that much of the violence is occurring outside of school near campuses and recreation centers.

Baltimore City State’s Attorney Ivan Bates also discussed youth violence in an interview with CBS Baltimore on Monday. Bates ran on a “tough-on-crime” platform, and he recently advocated to raise the maximum sentence for those 21 and older caught with an illegal gun from three to five years in prison.
