What’s happening?
During a recent donation drive, the Lutheran Immigration and Refugee Service’s (LIRS) national headquarters in Baltimore received mountains of boxes with dinnerware, clothing, shoes, diapers, bedding, and more for Afghans who have relocated to Baltimore.
Most of these recent evacuees arrived on “humanitarian parole” rather than “refugee” status and receive limited federal government assistance for 90 days and a one-time $1,250 stipend.
What else is being done to help?
LIRS president Krish O’Mara Vignarajah told The Baltimore Brew that their biggest challenge is helping Afghans restart their lives by finding and furnishing affordable housing units and helping them secure work. They have partnered with local landlords, individuals, and private companies like Airbnb who, in some cases, offer rent-free living.
Anything else I should know?
Folks who want to support the Lutheran Immigration and Refugee Service can continue to donate materials, make financial contributions, and volunteer to set up apartments, pick up refugees from the airport and provide meal assistance, mentorship, tutoring, and translating services.
