A New Cultural Arts Center Is Coming To West Baltimore

What’s happening?

A local nonprofit, called Intersection of Change, plans to build a new cultural arts center on Pennsylvania Avenue in West Baltimore, Billy Jean Louis reports for the Baltimore Sun. The 20,000-square-foot Sanaa Center, developed in partnership with the Pennsylvania Avenue Black Arts & Entertainment District—a cultural center dedicated to reinvigorating West Baltimore, will include a headquarters for the Arts & Entertainment District, along with workshops, studios, and display space.

What are the current plans for the construction?

The organizations expect the project to cost about $10 million, and they’ve already raised about $800,000 from the city and $600,000 from the state. Construction will likely begin in about a year and finish in 2025.

The new center will allow Intersection of Change—currently operating in Upton, Sandtown-Winchester, and nearby neighborhoods—to continue and expand its services, which include a residential program for women recovering from addiction, an art program, workforce development training, and employment opportunities for formerly incarcerated people.

“The goal was to serve the needs of our community — look at what was not being addressed and provide services to our community residents,” said Todd Marcus, executive director of Intersection of Change.

Brion Gill, executive director of the Arts & Entertainment District said, “They’re an organization that’s really [focusing on the] work.”

Anything else I should know?

Intersection of Change is also in the process of renovating a two-story building on Presstman Street with funding from the Maryland State Department of Housing and a private foundation. The organization is working to raise $250,000 for that project along with the $8 million needed for the Sanaa Center.
