A $12M Community Center Is Getting Built in Heart of West Baltimore

What’s happening?

A nonprofit affiliated with LifeBridge Health is turning a former gelato factory into a $12 million community center called “The Factory” at the corner of West Baltimore and Calhoun streets.

The area “has suffered from underinvestment and marginalization,” said Daniel Blum, a LifeBridge executive, at a kickoff event on Tuesday. City Councilman John Bullock, who represents the neighborhood, called the investment “a sign of bravery and faith in the community,” according to The Baltimore Business Journal.

Tell me more about the center.

The West Baltimore Renaissance Foundation will operate out of the 33,000-square-foot building, which will also have commercial and teaching kitchens, a classroom, a computer lab, and space for nonprofits to meet.

Anything else I should know?

The center is expected to open in Summer 2022.
